Turning Out ACORN

ACORN 2010The ‘community organization’ known as ACORN (Association for Communist Organization and Redistribution Now!) is no more. It announced recently that it would be closing all state affiliates and field offices by April 1, 2010. This is incredibly exciting news, but I haven’t spoken of it until now because I was waiting to see if it was just an April Fool’s joke.

It seems that the heroic community activism of James O’Keefe and his faux-whore associate has been fruitful. These American heroes showed that just two people can bring down the Goliath of low- and moderate-income ‘social justice’ organizations. And all it took was two people, one video camera, an editing suite, and a 24-hour news network with the courage to tell their story. Over and over again.

I guess now that it’s over it’s okay to let the cat out of the bag, and admit that these shocking videos, while accurate in their portrayal of ACORN’s corruption, may have been slightly tweaked to make that corruption clearer. This came to light recently when California prosecutors obtained the unedited footage of O’Keefe’s visits to the ACORN offices in order to see what charges to bring against ACORN. As it turns out, none.

For example, although ACORN did help a pimp and prostitute figure out how to pay taxes, O’Keefe didn’t actually ever say he was a pimp. Or dress like Superfly. (I know that he wore the costume in the videos, but not in the ACORN offices. Just in the B-roll.) And that they never showed the times when ACORN called the cops on them to report human trafficking. In fact, it turns out that the tapes that O’Keefe released were stupendously misleading.

Still, never look a gift horse in the mouth. ACORN, one of the largest organizations that helped low- and moderate-income families, has been shut down. The tapes may not have been that accurate, but they certainly were effective. And really, isn’t that what counts?
