A Simple Misunderstanding

Rep. Randy NeugebauerMany people are upset that Sunday night, while Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) was speaking out against the passage of his own anti-abortion amendment during the ‘Motion to Recommit’ portion of the Obamacare fiasco, Rep. Randy Neugebauer was heard to yell: “…Baby killer!” in a loud voice.

At least that’s how the mainstream media have reported it. This just shows the incredible bias of the MSM. They’ve selectively removed part of Rep. Neugebauer’s exclamation to make it sound worse than it actually was. Here’s Rep. Neugebauer’s statement on the matter:

“Last night was the climax of weeks and months of debate on a health care bill that my constituents fear and do not support. In the heat and emotion of the debate, I exclaimed the phrase ‘it’s a baby killer‘ in reference to the agreement reached by the Democratic leadership. While I remain heartbroken over the passage of this bill and the tragic consequences it will have for the unborn, I deeply regret that my actions were mistakenly interpreted as a direct reference to Congressman Stupak himself.

I have apologized to Mr. Stupak and also apologize to my colleagues for the manner in which I expressed my disappointment about the bill. The House Chamber is a place of decorum and respect. The timing and tone of my comment last night was inappropriate.”

Who would know better what Rep. Neugebauer actually yelled better than Rep. Neugebauer himself? No one, except maybe the people whose ears were right in front of his mouth. But make no mistake, misquoting for effect like this is a common ‘mistake‘ for the left to make. For example, I am also often misunderstood while yelling things at women walking into clinics.

Rep. Neugebauer is very clear here. He says that he regrets that his exclamation was “mistakenly interpreted as a direct reference to Congressman Stupak himself.” Nothing could be further from the truth. What he meant to say was that Rep. Stupak was opposing an amendment to end baby-killing, therefore supporting baby-killing, which would result in the passage of a bill which was a baby-killer, and eventually result in a drastic increase in baby-killing. He didn’t mean that Rep. Stupak was a baby killer at all, and I’m disappointed in the MSM for implying that.
