History is Written by the Victors

TEAI don’t think that I’m going out on a limb when I say that brainwashing is wrong. You might disagree with me, but I (for one) intend to stand up for morality. That’s why I was encouraged this week when I read about the Texas State Board of Education (SBOE), who is now debating what will be included in the next set of curriculum standards for Texas, and has provisionally passed a sweeping set of changes that counteract the liberal bias that has creeped into our schools. The final vote is scheduled for May. The Board looks like they’re actually going to be able to stand up to ‘Big Education’. The long national nightmare of institutional brainwashing of our children by the left looks like it may be on its last legs.

What’s the big deal about one state changing its standards? It probably wouldn’t be so important if Texas weren’t such a large state. Texas will be choosing new textbooks in 2011, and they will want a textbook that addresses state education standards. It would be expensive for textbook publishers to maintain different versions of textbooks for different states, so they try to only make one. Because Texas is such a large state (and orders such a large number of textbooks) it gets a much greater say in what is included in this one textbook. So thanks to the Texas SBOE, here’s what will likely be changed in your child’s social studies textbook, regardless of where (in the U.S.) you live (with the vote margins, when known):

  • Increased emphasis on America’s Judeo-Christian roots (11-3)
  • Removed discussion of the separation of church and state (10-5)
  • Removed the deist Thomas Jefferson from the section on the Enlightenment, replacing him with Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin, and Sir William Blackstone
  • Changed the atheist ‘B.C.E.’ and ‘C.E.’ back to ‘B.C.’ and ‘A.D.’
  • Changed ‘democratic republic’ to ‘constitutional republic’ when referring to America (9-3)
  • Added recognition of ‘American exceptionalism’ (8-3)
  • Removed references to ‘hip-hop’ in discussions of music, and added country (7-3)
  • Changed ‘capitalism’ to ‘free enterprise’ in all instances (except in the introduction) (8-7)
  • Added discussion of how ‘government taxation and regulations can serve as restrictions to private enterprise’
  • Included discussion of the ‘unintended consequences’ of the Great Society, affirmative action, and Title IX
  • Removed ‘justice’ and ‘responsibility for the common good’ from a list of characteristics of good citizenship
  • Added a discussion of the Second Amendment into the discussion of the importance of the expression of different points of view in a democratic republic

These may not seem like big changes, but they’re a start. The liberals have been trying to change our country by brainwashing our children, and they’ve been using the government-sponsored political indoctrination of the public school system. Let me rephrase that in a much scarier way: We are sending our children to school, and the teachers are actively trying to fill their heads with ideas. And if they succeed, our children come back from school filled with all of this crazy claptrap about the separation of church and state, that America is just another country and not the best country in the world, that you should try to be responsible for the common good, and who knows what else. It’s enough to make you sick.

Well, the Texas SBOE is drawing a line in the sand. If you want to take our country back, if you want to reverse the brainwashing, if you want to teach our children good conservative American values, then cross the line and stand with the SBOE. They’re starting the process of making sure that our children are taught the correct things in public school.
