Patriotism and the Presidency

EmailI got an angry email from an angry reader the other day:

“When did it suddenly become patriotic to work against the President in a time of war? I remember that when President Chimp [George Walker Bush -ed.] was President and I questioned his decision to go to war in Iraq I was called unpatriotic, but now it’s suddenly okay to talk about revolution and secession because President Obama wants to provide Americans with health insurance? What the hell?”

Well, maybe you don’t understand patriotism, Angry Reader. It’s a lot like justice: treating equal things equally and unequal things unequally. Patriotism is found in questioning the things that are bad for America, and not questioning the rest. What’s so hard to understand about that? It’s like you don’t even love your country.
